DIY Cage Bralette

Maybe it’s a little too late in the year to be thinking of summer dresses with exposed backs, or extreme 80′s tank tops with giant arm holes… but I’m very excited for warmer weather!  Because I made this little beauty:

…and now you can too!  Normally I don’t wear bralettes, but lately I’ve been bitten by the Nasty Gal/Brandy Melville style bug and I’m stepping out of my comfort zone with this.  Nasty Gal and Dolls Kill sell this very popular caged bralette/swimsuit top for around $75 or more, but I didn’t want to spend that much for just a bra.  This is my first time sewing a bikini/lingerie type piece and I’m glad I did…. it turned out amazingly well for my first try.

I spent $5.22 for 10 yards of elastic from Etsy, $0.99 for the black thread (I had just recently run out), and $2 for some stretchy little girl’s dance shorts at Goodwill… for a total of $8.21.

What you’ll need:

  • Stretchy black fabric for the two chest pieces
  • At least 5 yards of 5/8″ fold over elastic, or “FOE.”  I bought 10 yards and only used about half
  • A sewing machine
  • Black thread
  • 2 bra rings, 2 bra adjustable sliders:  I cut up an old black bra and used it for its parts
  • Scissors (or rotary blade, but that’s optional)
  • A ruler or measuring tape to make sure things are even

Fold over elastic can be found on Etsy and Ebay.  They come in different widths but the most common is 5/8″.

There are 2 sides to fold over elastic (aka FOE).  I chose to use the matte side.

You’ll be making a LOT OF STRAPS. A LOT.

Play around with your zig zag settings and tension to get the best amount of stretch in your straps.

Find some fabric to use for the cup/chest area.

Cut it up!

Let’s finish the edges with fold over elastic.

Make sure you have extra length for the straps. Just in case.

I’m a size 32, so I cut enough for a 32″ band.  Sew to attach.

Close your bra band together to make a loop:

Now it’s time to work on the back straps.  Find some bra parts!

Make your adjustable straps:

Now add the decorative straps to the cup area:

The loops should fit around your bottom ribcage.

It will seem very repetitive now, but we’re almost done.

When you’ve added all the straps you want… you’re finished!

Have fun and good luck!

  • American Retro Tank – $12 from Crossroads
  • Coach Sunglasses – $65 from Nordstrom Rack
  • Gold and brown handbag – $35 from Baghaus
  • Gladiator sandals – $12 from Burlington Coat Factory
  • Guess white capris – $10 from Guess

My ‘walking the Strip’ outfit!  The weather was an insane 100+ degrees during the day, so I had to keep cool by packing tops with natural fibers (cotton, linen).

Before my trip I stopped by Crossroads to sell some old clothes I never wear;  a pair of Citizens of Humanity Faye wide leg jeans that are now too small for me, and a pair of Loeffler Randall for Target flats that turned out to be too uncomfortable.  I bought this black tank with gold sequins with my ‘earnings’ and I still have about $13 of store credit left over!  I did a little research on American Retro… turns out it is a French brand.  Who knew?

I’m just lovin’ the sequins.  Pairing black and gold is now my signature look, especially in my accessories.  I just can’t get enough!

My favorite part about the sequins is that they’re very dainty and don’t accidentally catch on my accessories.  Yes!

Forever 21, havaianas, summer, Wearing Today, white denim

  • Forever 21 slouchy blue top – $8
  • 575 white denim jeans – $65
  • Havaianas Slim in Pewter – $12
  • Forever 21 necklace – $5.80

I can’t resist slouchy tops that slide off one shoulder.   I love showing off my shoulders because shoulders are perpetualy beautiful no matter how you feel that day.

And yes, the button on the 575 jeans is actually made from a penny!  These are my classic summer jeans.

We’re off to the farmers market to get some fresh juice and fruits.  And possibly some gelato.  Yum.  Ciao!

I think the first time I saw a monokini was on this GQ cover.  I’m not a huge fan of Jessica Alba.  She’s alright.  Cute face.  But I swooned over the monokini she had on.  I’m sure her summer tan and sculpted abs didn’t help either.

Soon after I wandered over to my nearest Target to check out the spread. I found a black bandeau monokini by Xhilaration that made me feel incredibly stylish and sexy!  I wasn’t too keen on paying the full price though, so I decided to wait.

I lusted after that monokini for an entire year.   I even set up a web shopping alert to snag it when it finally went on sale.  In the end, it sold out.  It seemed I was too stubborn for my own good.

Fast foward to today.  I drove over to my favorite thrift shop (my local ‘Target discount store’) and lo and behold!

The thrifting gods answered my prayers!

Price:  $6 with original tag

(Cue the choir of angels)

Xhilaration Bandeau Monokini in Black – originally $29.99 at Target (disregard the unflattering stock photo)

I think the only reason why I want these ridiculous sandals is because the shopbop model looks fabulous in it.

Conventionally ugly and too trendy to last longer than the 2009 summer season.

WANT!

Sigh.  Bravo shopbop marketing.   Bastards.
