I bought this makeup tutorial book while in Japan last year and I wanted to share it with you! (I have no rights to these images whatsoever)

Like many others I really enjoy Japanese fashion magazines and I’m grateful to those who take the time to scan and share it with others who don’t have the opportunity to read them in person. The very generous Eki from a little bit of Eki does Japanese magazine scans often and more scans can also be found at this livejournal community: jmagazinescans.livejournal.com .

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. :)

This is my last Japan photo post… I revisited Tokyo on the last day of my trip and it was truly bittersweet.

The last hotel: Touganeya hotel in Ueno

(If you’re ever in Tokyo I highly recommend this especially if you’re on a budget… reviews here)

Breakfast at Bubby’s near the train station

Bubby’s originates from New York?

And their pink lemonade is “FUCKIN’ FRESH” apparently. I notice that English cuss words are “trendy” in Japan.

Choco mousse pie:

Flavored Kit kats at the train station:

Iced tea? I’m not even sure of this but I didn’t buy it:

Lunch at a small but multi-story tonkatsu restaurant in Ueno (our lobby manager said that tonkatsu originated in Ueno):

US tonkatsu doesn’t even compare… even when its made at ‘authentic’ Japanese restaurants or markets.

Visited the Tokyo Zoo (my little sister loves animals)

Yup these elephants were attempting to mate and it was a HUGE spectacle but the male got stage fright and nothing happened. LOL.

Next stop: Akihabara (electronic mecca of Tokyo aka geek paradiiiise)

Pachinko!

We went to a giant electronics department store.. think Best Buy but 8 floors and the most high tech gadgets you can imagine in the most colorful designs ever!

Nintendo DS:

Cute pink Canon photo printer:

Many of the staff spoke English and they really try to push hard at selling to foreign buyers. Not in an impolite way of course but they are very eager and happy to help with questions.

Yes this is a Winter Sonata Korean Drama Nintendo DS game!

Colorful touch screen phones:

I was SO TEMPTED to buy one of these tiny Sony Vaio laptops in white! Look at the size relative to my hand… and I have pretty small hands at that:

A little egg shaped mouse (I bought a white one to use with my little pink netbook)

Touch screen net book! BOTH screens are touch-screens.

More crane game prizes:

Halloween-themed Capybaras

REALLY super cute cats

The sheer number of cat design is mind boggling. Creativity is unconfined in Japan!

Girls dressed up in maid costumes to promote their maid cafés! My friend said prices were exorbitant ($8 cup of coffee?)

I don’t quite remember what company this mascot is from but he is damn cute.

Another meal at the swanky Ginza district. We had chazuke which is essentially rice with green tea.

Chazuke sounds like a really plain dish but our waitress explained to us that this certain type of chazuke was more refined and ‘special.’ Basically… this type of chazuke was for more wealthier people back in the day.

Here she is explaining what the different mounds of food are: mashed egg yolk, finely ground white fish, and finely ground egg white.

The spread:

Various side dishes to the left, chawanmushi (steamed egg) in the top middle bowl, and agedashi tofu in the bottom middle bowl.

The next photos will be of my last and most memorable experience in Japan.

An old college friend of mine is good friends with this Iron Chef, Mr. Hirano, AKA “The Captain.” I’m unsure if he was in an American Iron Chef episode or a Japanese one but they kept replaying this Iron Chef opening on a TV in the corner. My college friend said apparently he got a perfect score.

(photo via)

Here’s a more recent photo of him… my friend was laughing because Mr. Hirano went to Hawaii and became SO TAN that an African American man stopped him and asked for a photo because Mr. Hirano was DARKER THAN HIM. LOL

Doremi of Tokyo is located in the Ginza District of Tokyo and its main cuisine focus is teppanyaki, or the style of cooking where an iron grill or plate is used to cook your food.

The menu changes with the seasons. This is basically the ENTIRE kitchen:

We got the “Expensive” Menu set:

Expensive
*3 Appetizers
*NY-Style Pan-Fried Breaded Garlic Scallops
*Cod with ‘Saikyo’ Miso Doremi-Style

Please choose one of the following:
*Beef Fillet with Foie Gras Kabayaki-Style
*Beef Fillet with Korean Kochijan Sauce and Kinzanji-Miso Alan Wong-Style

*Acqua Pazza of Homard Lobster
*Ultimate Chicken Cheese
*Doremi’s ‘One Spoon’
*Please select an Okonomiyaki of choice from the a la carte menu
*Dessert
6,000 yen

Spicy egg drop soup:

NY-Style Pan-Fried Breaded Garlic Scallops:

Cod with ‘Saikyo’ Miso:

And one GIANT pepper mill for a dramatic effect.

Doremi’s ‘One Spoon’ dish. Basically you eat this in ONE bite. Oyster, pork cheek, monja Flakes with truffle oil. SO DELICIOUS.

The finished product:

My most FAVORITE dish of the night was beef steak with foie gras and dried mango slices. Seriously this was so incredibly amazing. I’m not a huge food snob but this was pure. unadulterated. HEAVEN.

A salad with roasted cheese crisp:

Another salad:

Okonomiyaki:

Lobsters cooking in a foil bag on the grill:

The finished product: Acqua Pazza of Homard lobster:

Mr. Hirano tried to do this trick at least 10 times during the night.. basically he spins a raw egg on his spatula, then launches it in the air and turns his spatula 90 degrees so the raw egg lands on the blade…

I wasn’t able to catch a successful attempt but I managed to catch one of his mistakes.. can’t blame a guy for trying! He did manage to do it correctly a few times. Still amazing!

And something so amazing and memorable: Towards the end of the night Mr. Hirano asked my sister and I to wear some official chef garb! I was so shocked and I felt so privileged to wear it!!!!! He said that he had never seen someone so enthusiastic about taking photos of food before… lol. So I guess that made him happy.

He insisted that we do the Iron Chef “pose”…He even asked us to go behind the kitchen counter!

And that’s the end of my Japan trip series! Thank you so very much for following me on my journey through Japan… I encourage you to visit if you can :)

I can’t wait to go back!

I have one more Japan Trip post to do (Tokyo Part II) but before I do that, here’s what I bought makeup-wise in Japan with quick reviews!

(If you’d like to buy, I’ll try my best to find appropriate links)

From left:

  • Candy Doll Lipgloss in Macaron Pink
  • Rimmel Nude Plump Laquer in 006 (exclusive to Japan, not in UK or US)
  • Makemania Lip Concealer
  • Canmake Nudy Glow Lipgloss in 004
  • INTEGRATE stunning hydra moisture lipstick in PK261 (I think that’s the translation) (similar here)

Mini review:

My favorite is definitely the Rimmel Nude Plump gloss! A peachy nude without being too washed out. I’m so sad this is only available in Japan… If we had an opaque nude gloss line for Rimmel in the USA I swear girls would be going crazy!

The Canmake Nudy Glow gloss is more of a milky nude… this one washes me out a bit and I’m still trying to find a way to wear this without looking .. dead. haha. Also still trying to find a way to wear the Candy Doll gloss nicely.. this one feels more “dry” and it accentuates dry skin on the lips.

I haven’t tried out the lip concealer yet.

The INTEGRATE lippie is very sheer and moisturizing. It gives off a very wet look.

Swatches:

A closer look at the INTEGRATE lippie:

Mascara and liners: (from top)

  • Fiberwig Tiny Sniper
  • Kate Liquid Eyebrow in BR-3
  • K-Palette Real Lasting Eye Pencil in Black
  • K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner in Black
  • Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus
  • Fiberwig Extra Long

I like the Fiberwig Tiny Sniper.. I guess the fibers could be longer but it’s still okay for lower lashes.

I use the KATE liquid eyebrow pen every day… its basically a very diluted brown eyeliner and it stays put all day.

I haven’t used the K-Palette lasting eye pencil yet, but I bought the K-Palette eyeliner pen as a backup since they sell it here at my local Mitsuwa.

The MM Lash Expander Plus is FABULOUS.. I think I like this better than my regular Fiberwig, actually. It gives off a slight wet look.

I haven’t used the Fiberwig Extra Long mascara yet because I’m still using up my old one.

Extra items:

  • Parado Glitter Nail Polish
  • (seen here and here)

  • No-brand glitter polish from 100 yen store
  • Canmake Cheek Gradation Blush

I ADORE the Parado glitter polish! Its actually used for glitter tips for french manis but I love brushing it all over the nail. I’m going to be so sad when this is gone…Haven’t used the middle glitter polish yet!

The Canmake blush is pretty in the compact and the color payoff is sheer, which is fine for me. I guess its not that remarkable but I’m not a big blush person anyway.

Eyeshadows:

Sweets Sweet Glitter Brown Eyeshadow
Lavshuca Melty Eyes in OR-1
KATE Reflect Mirror Eyes in OR-1
KATE Gradical Eyes in OR-1

I went a little crazy with orange/peach colored eyeshadows. I already have my HG KATE Glamtrick Eyes in BR-1 which is more of a golden-brown palette so I wanted to warm up my eyes with something new!

The Lavshuca palette is my absolute favorite of the shadows I bought… the shadows are so silky and not overly glittery. Fallout isn’t bad either.

The KATE Gradical eyes palette… eh. I’ve seen better color payoff.

The KATE Mirror Reflect palette… I haven’t really used this aside from the center color for underneath my eyes.

Foundations:

Moisture Forming Powder UV in O-20 for F/W 2010

I keep this in my purse at all times for touchups! Honestly this is my first powder foundation and I really like it.

What it claims: Powder foundation in 7 shades with SPF20 and PA++. It has a light texture that helps to maintain moisture, conceal pores as well as provide a translucent glowy effect.

Treatment Lasting Compact UV in O-20 for F/W 2010

I use this everyday now… I MUST find a backup because I LOVE THIS FOUNDATION. Right now its going on Ebay for $50+ so I’m waiting for another option. It’s super smooth and covers nicely.

What it claims: Cream foundation that transforms into powder upon application. This provides long-lasting coverage of pores and moisturising benefits. Available in 7 shades with SPF24 PA++ and can be applied with either a dry or damp sponge. The foundation comprises 70% treatment ingredients and combines the soft natural finish of liquid foundations with the light texture of powder foundations.

Dolly Wink Lashes:
No. 2 and No. 5

Yes these lashes are everywhere! I’ve worn out both types once already and I love how pliable the lash band is. I thought they would be overly long on me but thankfully they turned out okay.

Other lashes:
Couldn’t find info for the top left ones.. sorry :( Its too bad because I like these a lot.. they have a lot of volume as far as the number of lashes but the individual lashes have varying thicknesses….the end effect looks like very soft fur and they look super natural. The rest are from 100 yen shops.

Diamond lashes:

That’s a lot lashes per pack! I’m unsure of where to buy these online :( But I think these will last me a long time.. I don’t go through lashes that fast! I’ve tried on a pair from the middle set so far… I love spiky falsies with volume! :D

Thanks for reading! :)

Ahhh Yokohama :)

Yokohama is south of Tokyo and is near Tokyo Bay.. it has a theme park and its own little Chinatown!

There wasn’t too much to see here historically so I decided to focus on my favorite things there… food and shopping :D

Elmo in the lobby:

By the waterfront:

I managed to capture a little fish jumping out of the water (it happened a LOT and at first I wasn’t sure what it was)

My friend works in one of these buildings and on the bottom there’s a MALL. SO JEALOUS.

Onto the shopping pics (mostly decor)!

Pretty little bento boxes reminiscent of Liberty of London prints:

See the donut themed container on the right? Loove!

More whimsical kitchen items:

They had this small section of designer homegoods… these little q-tip containers were nearly 40 bucks! Wow. Still cute though.

I like how warm and clean this dining setup is… Not too cold, far from traditional and very organic.

Adorable little houseplants:

The most adorable little kitchen island:

I’m a big tea drinker and I’ve NEVER seen tea steepers like these…strawberries!

Super cute (and maybe a tad creepy) cat vinyl figures for decor:

A closer look at the lingerie section… I like how in general Asia sells their lingerie in SETS… meaning bras and panties are completely matched and I feel like I’m getting a better deal this way. The ones here are a little more than $20/set:

Deco nails! I wanted to take a photo so I could remember and copy this style.. haha. I love how delicate the pink gradients are for each set. My favorite is the second set!

Bath goods.. seriously I was in HEAVEN. Their jewelry organizers and train cases were super gorgeous… you can see a few of them in the center here:

Super blinged out jewelry boxes:

The prettiest trash cans and toilet brushes I’ve ever seen (LOL)

Rugs:

Bedsheets:

Plastic and ceramic ANIMALS! Wow so strange especially those purple dinosaurs:

Cute little lamps! The apple ones up top are my favorite:

An interesting bedroom setup called “Glamorous Hunter!” Haha. (I love the string lights):

Bunny shaped pillows:

Pretty baskets with subtle washed out colors… you may think this is boring but I LOVE THIS kind of thing. Everyday items that are functional yet beautiful. I mean, come on.. compare this to what we have: RUBBERMAID.

Danish-modern style couch and coffee table.. the shapes and colors are right up my alley:

Guess what these are: toilet paper holders! And yes that is colored toilet paper:

Reallyyy cute elephant shaped teaware:

Metal “drop” trays.. perfect for ring collectors like me!

Throws in yummy colors:

Dishes:

Super cute vanity mirrors (the ones on the left are my favorite):

Jewel-toned toothbrushes (they actually have a little jewel detail on the bottom of each brush!)

Designer toothpastes by Breath Palette:

0: Mouth Gel (no flavor)
1: Amajio (?)
2: Tropical Pineapple
3: Peppermint
4: Freshness Yogurt
5: Ichibanzumi Green Tea
6: Rose
7: MONKEY BANANA (lolol!)

Slippers (the colors remind me of French macarons)

More bath accessories:

A peek at the food court. Seriously Japan food courts bring ours to SHAME. Look how clean and inviting it is!

Truthfully it was a little difficult to find boba in Japan. I was surprised to finally see a nicely displayed shop… and keeping with modern Japanese tradition they had ALL of their flavors on display in liquid form:

Speaking of food, had a wonderful dinner by the pier with a friend from college and his coworkers:

Mentaiko/fish roe pasta I think:

The most DELICIOUS blend of omuraisu and hayashi raisu:

A little berry tart!

Visited Chinatown:

The most RANDOM assortment of cell phone charms ever: (raw meat, raw fish, sushi, noodles, fruit)

“Poop”/unchii shaped gummi candy that was cola flavored. Yes I tried one.. not bad. Lol.

This was something like.. katsu flavored snacks. Maybe dried fish? I don’t quite remember but how strange is that!?

On a random note… while walking through Chinatown this guy was TOTALLY grabbing his girlfriend’s/wife’s butt.. check her out trying to peel his hand off. HAHA

We saw this massive Korean pop/drama store that sold literally everything you could think of.. and they were all emblazoned with every single K-star you could imagine. Pens, pencils, clocks, calendars, shirts, mugs, you name it!

My friend bought a calendar for his little sister (super cute)

Stickers:

Stairs leading up to MORE shopping! My mom would have died cuz she loves K-dramas. Lol.

Okay that’s it for Yokohama! One more Japan blog post to go!

Next post: Tokyo Part II!

Japan Trip 2010: Kyoto

Kyoto is Japan’s original imperial capital with a very rich history.

The city is a perfect blend of old and new…

Can you spot the turtle? :)

I’ve been to Kyoto before so as far as touristy spots I just went to the Fushimi Inari Shrine (remember the scene in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha?” where Chiyo is running through all these gates? This is the place.)

Two of the gate entrances side by side:

There were many fox statues at this shrine…

“The kitsune (aka fox) statues are at times taken for a form of Inari, and they typically come in pairs, representing a male and a female. These fox statues hold a symbolic item in their mouths or beneath a front paw — most often a jewel and a key, but a sheaf of rice, a scroll, or a fox cub are all common. Almost all Inari shrines, no matter how small, will feature at least a pair of these statues, usually flanking or on the altar or in front of the main sanctuary”

Lots of stray cats around the shrine.. this one only had one eye :(

Wishes and prayers…

You can buy these mini tori gate replicas and write your wishes onto them too:

These plaques were my FAVORITE though… look at all of the creativity! They are blank with only eyebrows. The rest of the fox face you can draw in yourself.

More touristy pics of souvenirs:

(Hehe! “I <3 Kyoto” fans on the left)

Shurikens or “ninja stars”

Final Fantasy VII figures… ok so random but I <3 FF!

So the highlight of this trip was actually hiring a REAL geisha and being introduced to the geisha history and culture via a geisha expert.

The cost of this was very high. We paid roughly $60 per person for a couple hours time with her and there were 12 of us. You do the math! Being a geisha is very expensive… the clothes, going to the hairdresser, learning new skills and taking classes, etc.

It is a dying art… most men and businessmen nowadays would rather take out a girl who wears sexy clothes and actually *puts out* (ahem) rather than hire an expensive geisha who just plays an instrument or does a traditional dance and serves you drinks. We did see a few businessmen with their clients taking a geisha out for the evening. Supposedly this is to show your clients you are a supporter of the arts. And its a misconception that geishas are prostitutes… real geishas DON’T PUT OUT.

Being a geisha means you must make sure your clients aren’t bored, and that they are comfortable and at ease. You also serve them drinks. Its kind of like being a performer of the arts, a waitress, and a stewardess all in one.

Sadly I’ve already forgotten her name but the geisha we hired was only 17 years old! She chose to be a geisha of her own free will and she was very sweet and nice :) So innocent, in fact, that she doesn’t have a cell phone and has never kissed a boy.

She was so cute… she did an interview for Brazilian TV that day with some Brazilians that lived in Tokyo. They told her they were going home via bullet train (shinkansen) and she replied…

…”to BRAZIL?”

AHAHAHHA SO CUTE!!!

A closer look at her kimono:

Playing the shamisen for us:

Outside on this bridge.. supposedly this is where Chiyo meets the Chairman in the film/novel:

After the geisha said her goodbyes we went to eat a late dinner…

Saw this girl on the way there… loved her style!

The front of the restaurant we went to: (doesn’t it remind you of that one sunscreen logo? Coppertone?)

A wall of stickers.. these stickers are actually calling cards of geisha. Pretty much the equivalent of a business card.

I forgot what this was but it was similar to okonomiyaki…sweet and savory

More food pics!

Got dessert at this AMAZING ninja-themed restaurant called Ninja Kyoto. They also have an attached sweets shop called Sweets of Ninja.

We got a crepe! A BLACK crepe :D Strawberry with chocolate and whipped cream. For an additional fee we included a ninja star cookie too!

Some random toys at a nearby game stop…

A cafe with delicious looking matcha drinks and food on display… mmm. Japanese restaurants and cafes are so clever… the whole concept of putting food outside for you to check out before you go in is GENIUS.

Passed by a Bape store on the way.. it was closed though :(

On a different night we had revolving sushi for dinner!!

Battered and fried shrimp:

California roll.. in Japan!! wow.

Fatty tuna (melts in your mouth!)

Honestly forgot what these next two were but they do look good.. :)

Salmon nigiri:

More shrimp:

Thanks for reading :)

Next city: Yokohama
