What I Learned About UGG Australia Boots: They are NOT Australian!

I just came back from my New Zealand / Fiji/ Australia vacation yesterday and while shopping in Sydney I came across many UGG boots for sale.  (Right now Australia is entering their winter season, FYI)

I did a quick Google search on UGG boots in Sydney, which lead me to the historic Sydney neighborhood, The Rocks to find a pair of UGG boots and check prices.

I came upon a large store emblazoned, “UGG Australian made since 1974:”

I decided on a pair of black short boots… my $30 Kirkland Costco boots are well worn (and almost to the bare soles) and I thought, heck, I’m in Australia, might as well buy something that originated in Australia!  In the end I paid $129 (not including Australian taxes) for the shoes.

Funny thing was, I noticed that the logo at the back of the heel was different than what I had normally seen in UGG Boots in the USA.

In actuality, there are 2 different UGG stores in The Rocks neighborhood…  UGG Australia is sold at a small boutique on 139 George Street, Sydney while UGG Australian Made is sold at a large store on 140 George Street, Sydney.  I missed the small boutique while in Sydney, which sells a variety of goods and brands and instead went to the large shop (only one brand sold) instead.

UGG Australian Made vs UGG Australia:

I did more online research that night since I was a bit perplexed at the difference in the label.  It turns out, that the UGG Australia brand that the USA is used to, is an American company, Deckers Outdoor Corporation.  In Australia, the word “UGG” is not a specific brand but a generic term for that type of shoe.  The “UGG Australia” brand boots that are so popular in the States are mass produced in China.  It is a USA brand and not Australian…. which is a little misleading because the name of the brand is “UGG Australia.”

And maybe the most interesting fact to note… The word “UGG” has been revoked as a trademark in Australia and as a result the Deckers corporation cannot trademark there.  The Deckers corporation holds trademarks in the USA, China and the EU, and NOT Australia.

From this London firm article: “The Australian Sheepskin Association is attempting to change the name UGG into a regional mark similar to that achieved for Champagne which would negate it’s trademark status in many jurisdictions. Deckers in response has focused on the fact that its UGG boots are made in China and not Australia.”

I have not purchased UGG Australia boots in the USA so I cannot compare them to my recently purchased boots.  It also came with this tag:

This logo is a trademark registered by the Australian government to indicate that “the product has been manufactured here (not just packaged) and 50% or more of the cost of making it can be attributed to Australian materials and/or production processes.”

Phew.  The history of the UGG boot and the trademark wars makes it all very confusing.  And since UGG Australia’s boots are made in China, it can be said that UGG boots that are made in Australia are “FAKE.”

So here is the dilemma.

Is it better to buy the “UGG Australia” brand that we are all familiar with and the one that is the most popular worldwide? …Despite the brand is from the USA and they manufacture their goods in China?

Or….

Is it better to buy an UGG boot that is made with Australian materials in Australia, since that style of boot was created there?  The downside would be that the Australian brands are not as recognizable or sought after like the USA ones.

What do you think?

Buying Thrift, then Selling to Consignment

[ my crossroads pile to sell ]

Hmm.  Shopping musings.

I recently sold a LOT of unused clothes & shoes to Crossroads the other day. I’ve been buying and selling from them for years so I have a pretty good idea of what they will take from me.

I ended up going home with $120 worth of store credit from that pile above…and they didn’t take that giant box of boots and a few other things.  Not too shabby, I think.  Normally you can get (I think) 35% in cash of the price that they’ll sell the items at, or 50% in store credit value.

The only clothes I have bought so far this year is a $100 pair of hiking pants for our upcoming Fiji & Australia trip.  After winning a Pinterest contest from Piperlime, I shaved off half of that using a $50 gift card.  I haven’t bought anything fashion-related besides that.

I’m currently on the hunt for a chambray button down shirt, but nothing has come up.  I did, however, see this cute version from Forever 21 in stores, but they didn’t have my size.  The price also turned me off.

$24.80!?!

I really think that Forever 21′s pricing has gotten higher.  Maybe not their “deals” with the yellow tags…. but it seems like they have increased their garment selection, and with that, their prices.  I *do* notice some items are of better quality than the past.  Keyword: SOME.  Not all, but some.  I really would have thought that this shirt would be $17.80.  Some of their jackets used to max out at $35 and now I’m seeing some in the $40-range.

Is this happening to H&M too?

Fast fashion doesn’t seem so inexpensive anymore.

I’m thinking.. at least for now, can I stick to thrifting for a while?  And if I do, can I resell to Crossroads in the future and get my money back?

Let’s say I get lucky and buy a designer brand shirt at the thrift store for $5.  Later on I get tired of it… I sell it for $5 in store credit to Crossroads.  Now I can buy more clothes using that credit from Crossroads.  Most times the scenario won’t be perfect, and I will definitely lose some money.  Crossroads may not take the item.  Maybe Crossroads will buy it from me, but for less value than I paid.

But at least I can turn that wasted storage space into a new item, without spending much more.

Now I have $120 to spend at Crossroads… I’m telling myself if I have the itch to spend, I’ll head to Crossroads first.

I don’t think I can stick to buying thrift & consignment ‘forever.’  Digging through racks of clothes to find fashion gold can get tiring.  Retail makes it so easy nowadays, but it comes at a price.  But.. I’m going to try.  At least for now.

An Ode to a Shoe: Sam Edelman Zoe Boots

One fateful night in 2010, I was out having dinner and drinks at Santana Row in San Jose.  As my group was gathering outside figuring out where to go next, I saw out of the corner of my eye, a well dressed girl with a pair of boots on.  They weren’t any ordinary pair of boots.  They were absolutely gorgeous! I had never seen boots like those before, and without shame I ogled those boots nonstop until it was time for us to leave.

It was really the first time I fell in love at first time.. with a shoe.

Through the power of the internet I found out the style and maker!  Hallelujah.  So I bought them online on my birthday that year on Lori’s Shoes using an online coupon.  They have since sold out from that site but due to its popularity it’s easily found online.  Today’s current Zoe prices haven’t changed much, and after two years of wear I believe the price is justified.

Sam Edelman – The Zoe Boot

The harness is removable, but I find that I like it on much better.

So over two years later… These boots are still one of my favorite shoes to go out in.  They have worn well too.. I took these shoe pics this morning and they still look great!  The hidden 1.25″ platform, wide base and thick heel make this shoe very comfortable… and I have very finicky feet.  I love the look of spindly stiletto heels but frankly I can’t hang!

How I style it:

Inspiration:

It’s super chunky.. but I think it makes the legs look slim especially with black skinnies.

This is my 4th clutch project in my zippered clutch series!  Check them out along with other DIY projects here.

I asked you for your opinions on this $5 sequin top at the end of 2011:

…and 60% of you said to turn it into a clutch instead of leaving it alone!  I also thought about turning into a skirt, but honestly A) I don’t think I’d wear it and B) I haven’t made a skirt before!

As I readied the sequin fabric for sewing I realized I could make an additional makeup pouch out of the two sleeves.

Here’s the finished makeup pouch!

I think I’ll sell this one for either at my Etsy shop or my blogshop.  I haven’t posted it up yet though, I’m about to head to another LASIK appointment right now.

The larger sequin clutch will be completed later on.  Thanks for reading! :)
