Urban Outfitters Haul: Extra 50% off clearance

18 Friday May 2012

My local Urban Outfitters is having another extra 50% off clearance sale!  Usually when Black Friday rolls around they have a MASSIVE early morning sale that is insanely packed.  See my Black Friday haul from last year here.

I happened to walk in yesterday to check it out, and lo and behold… they are having the same sale.  Less crowds, less hassle and most likely more to choose from than the Black Friday sale.cut

What I bought:

Truly Madly Deeply Printed Cold Shoulder Sweatshirt, XS

$19.99 online, $5 at my local store

Silence and Noise Cutaway Bodycon Tank, S

$9.99 online, $5 at my local store

My shadow was blocking the light so it looks discolored towards the bottom… whoops.  It looks just like the model picture above.

Cooperative Island Pullover, S

$29.99 online, $5 at my local store

I thought this was cheeky and fun for cool nights in Hawaii… we’ll be going there a lot in the future so I thought it would be cute to wear there.  I liked the pineapple on the pink one but the blue sweater felt more wearable.  I love the back!!!

Sparkle and Fade Mesh Tank Top, XS

$44 online, $5 at my local store

Great for summer over a bikini.

UO Border Cave Collar

$18 online, $5 at my local store

 Beaded tribal necklace

I couldn’t find this one online, $5 at my local store

Chandelier spike earrings

$4.99 online, $2.50 at my local store

Bamboo hoop earrings

$9.99 online, $2.50 at my local store

I also snagged a couple boxes of these Kid Robot Pop! balloon figurines… you don’t know what you’re going to get until you open the box!

$1 each

A few other things I bought:  a funny chocolate candy bar for $1, and a pink little Iphone stand for $1

Grand total:

Make sure to call your local Urban Outfitters to see if the sale is still on.. I wanted to get this blog post up quickly so you can see a little bit of what they have there.

Quick clothing tip: Fixing loose threads with a felting needle

I’m sharing a quick clothing tip with you today: how to fix loose threads on clothing with a felting needle

Two months ago I bought an LAMade french terry hoodie at TJMaxx (Instagram’d here).  I was hemming and hawing about buying it because I knew the soft terry material would be prone to snags… actually a few of the same hoodies on the rack were already getting damaged!

I loved the design too much though, so I decided to buy it anyway and try to take care of it.

I wasn’t wrong in my assumptions… here’s the right shoulder after one day of wear:

The back of the hoodie also had a few snags too.

Instead of giving up and donating your damaged clothing to a thrift store, or cutting loose threads (which could damage the integrity of the material) first try using a felting needle instead.

A felting needle has tiny jagged edges cut into the needle.  It is typically used to sculpt wool roving.  All you need to do is push the needle through the material and the barbs tangle and matt the threads together.

Make sure you separate the top layer of clothing from the bottom layer… you don’t want to attach the two!  Also, watch out for your fingers.

Make sure to be careful, as these needles are very SHARP.

Just push the loose thread in with the needle and it should go in without disturbing the rest of the material.  Repeat a few times if the loose thread is stubborn.

And after using the needle, here is the completed shoulder:

I bought my needles at a local sewing shop, but you can find them online as well.  Try this listing on Etsy for a single needle for $4.50.  Or try doing an Etsy search for felting needles here.  I wouldn’t pay for more than $5 total for one, and even though I have a pack of 3, all you really need is a single needle.

So that’s my quick clothing tip!  Have fun and be careful!

Future T-Shirt DIY

As hard as I try, I can never resist slubby knits and soft tees, especially in unique shapes.  Chiffon and silk blouses have a more grown-up feel but most times they leave me a bit cold.

Bein’ as petite as I am, these looks probably aren’t “suited” for my body type… but you know what?  Who gives a damn!  I’m a tunic + skinnies/leggings girl and proud!! :)

Here are a few inspirational tees that I’ve saved on my Future DIY list:

{Asos}

I love the braided straps and the slouched sleeves.  Tops that show off the shoulders are so incredibly sexy to me.  Casual yet seductive.  I’d probably get a soft men’s shirt from the thrift store, then cut off the top straight across the shoulders.  After cutting out strips I’d braid them together to create the straps.  Then you just sew the straps to the shirt and wa-lah!  You have a similar tee!

Inspirational cropped tee from a recent StyleLikeU interview.  It already looks so thin and soft in this photo… in person it must be amazing.  I’d also looove to emulate this entire outfit.  I even have all the components except the tee!

{via}

Oversized boxy tees!  I have one with a sewn-on cinched belt and when I wear it I’ve been told that I resemble a Jedi.  haha.

{Asos}

{Etsy}

Just find a square piece of jersey fabric, fold it in half once.  Sew up the sides half way, leaving an opening for the sleeves.  Cut out a hole for your head!  Finished!

Seems simple enough to DIY but we’ll have to see how it pans out when I try this out! :)

My first clothing purchase this year

Yeah.. I didn’t think I’d last this long either.

I’ve been trying to find some washed silk pants like these from Aritzia’s Fall/Winter ’09 lookbook but I didn’t want to shell out the cash to buy the real thing.  They look a bit like silk PJ pants but with the right shoes I’m sure it’d look amazing.

I searched ASOS.com for a pair but didn’t see anything worth buying.  This weekend, however, I found these pants from Forever21 (it was on sale for $23.84… seems like its not on sale anymore).   It’s also 100% silk and the inseam is shorter… but it should hit my ankles anyway since I’m small.  I had a $25 gift card from a return in 2009 so it doesn’t affect my budget too much.

I like how they style it with heels and oxfords on the Forever 21 site… I’m planning to wear my Miu Miu oxfords with them as well once the weather gets warmer.
