Supposedly we’ll be getting an early spring this year, and what embodies spring more than pastel colors?

This 4 way color gradient gives off an almost duochrome-like effect. I added a thin layer of white polish on top to diffuse the colors. This also makes the nail look like it is lit from within! :D If you don’t have any pastel polish, try using regular colors and then whitewash it with your sheer white polish. My turquoise polish was the lightest one I had on hand, but the white overlay plays it down a bit.

If the glitter & rhinestones are a bit too much for you, feel free to just do the gradient :}

NOTD: Sally Hansen Ring my Shell and Spoiled Jewelry Heist

What I used:

  • 1 coat of CND Sticky Base
  • 2 coats Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Ring My Shell
  • 3 coats of Spoiled Jewelry Heist on the ring finger
  • 1 coat of Seche Vite topcoat

Ring My Shell is very difficult to photograph!  In real life the metallic sheen is more green in tone.. I think this photo by Kitty Pretty Fingers captures it better.

Jewelry Heist by Spoiled (which is part of Wet n Wild) was an impulse buy at CVS for $1.99 I believe.  I like how the colors are a muted pink and gold hex glitter with specks of smaller iridescent glitter and silver glitter.  I love glitter polishes and its nice to find an inexpensive one that has muted colors.

NOTD: My Attempt at Lynderella’s Gotta Love Brains featuring Revlon Whimsical

What I used:

  • 1 coat of CND Sticky Base
  • 1 coat of China Glaze Pelican Gray
  • 2 coats of Revlon Whimsical
  • 1 light spotting coat of Milani Jewel FX Silver
  • 1 coat of Seche Vite topcoat

I was inspired by this Lynderella polish, “Gotta Love Brains”:

{via Pinterest}

If you are unfamiliar with “franken” polishes, they are simply non-commercial, DIY-type polishes that usually feature crazy amounts of glitter.  They are (generally) difficult to obtain because of demand.  I’ve stalked the online nail shop Llarowe for quite some time to see if I could snag a bottle, but they sell out so quickly that I never get the chance to.  And on top of that, each bottle is $15.  Yes, you read that right.  It’s just $3 short of a Deborah Lippman polish at Nordstrom.

Anyhoo, my attempt at a similar color combo isn’t nearly as pretty as the Gotta Love Brains polish itself (sigh), but I think its interesting in its own way.  The China Glaze Pelican Gray looks a bit blue in the nail photo, sorry about that…But the shade is true to the bottle.  Next time I think I’ll use a true baby blue as a base instead of the gray.

Revlon Whimsical is a dupe for Deborah Lippmann’s “Glitter in the Air” polish.   I got it for $5 at ULTA, since I couldn’t find it at any other drug store in my are (CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Target.)  I wish the glitter was a bit more concentrated, and more like their other chunky glitter polishes, but oh well what can you expect for $5!

NOTD: Spooky Spiderweb with Revlon Facets of Fuschia

What I used:

  • 1 coat of Rimmel Black Satin
  • 3 coats of Revlon “Facets of Fuchia”
  • Bundle Monster IP BM13 (spider web & spider)
  • Konad special polish in white & random red polish for spider, and 1 rhinestone from a random nail kit
  • 1 coat of Seche Vite topcoat

In celebration of Hallow’s Eve I’ve done a subtly spooky mani :) This is the second Revlon glitter polish that I’ve bought and I’m pleased once again! It has a black jelly base with 2 different sizes of fuchia glitter. The only negative I can see is that I need quite a few coats for optimal glitter coverage. I’ve always wanted to do a Halloween manicure ever since I’ve gotten the Bundle monster plate set… And coincidentally I have a HUGE giant orange spider living outside my complex. AHHH!

In regards to my recent Hawaii trip, I’ve been going through my photos to upload and I’ll be posting about it very soon! Looking at the them and reminiscing about it makes me so happy. It was actually my first big vacation without friends or family and I am so incredibly thankful to have Justin in my life. :)

Review: Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner

Long time no post! ( I’ve been very busy with my Etsy shop, and between sewing orders and mousing/typing at work my hands have been hurting again. sigh.)

Anyway I wanted to write about the Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid toner, since I bought it in April 2011 and I feel I’ve had enough time to give a substantial review. :)

I first found about Mario Badescu years ago through their magazine ads, most notably their famous dual-layered drying lotion.

Sometime last year I was working through my subscriptions in my Google reader and someone had posted a link to FREE Mario Badescu samples through the company site, so I decided to try it out!

(Here’s the link)

In order to get the free samples you have to answer questions about your skin type and they will recommend a series of products for you. I don’t guarantee you’ll get the glycolic acid toner in your sample set though, since the samples you’ll receive depend on the answers you give them. But nonetheless if you aren’t familiar with the brand it will be an inexpensive way to try their products out.

My skintype is a combination type: dry cheeks, oilier nose and chin that isn’t overly sensitive to products. Before my current regimen I had a pimple maybe once a month or so. In my teen years my skin was much oilier and acne prone. Thankfully my skin has become much more manageable and I’m so glad those days are over!

In a few weeks after completing the questionnaire I received 6 little bottles and containers of samples as well as an extensive product guide. And in my little sample kit I received a tiny bottle of the blue Glycolic Acid toner.

From the Mario Badescu website:

A Solution For Wrinkles and Pigmentation. Formulated with 2% Glycolic Acid and Grapefruit Extract which work together to exfoliate, refresh and stimulate dry and congested skin. Helps reduce discoloration from old acne scars as well as build-up that can cause skin to look tired and dull. Alcohol free.

For: Dry or Sensitive Skn

HOW TO USE: Twice daily after cleansing, pat skin dry and apply lotion dampened cotton by wiping in an outward direction until cotton comes up clean. Avoid eye area. Follow with moisturizer or night cream.

INGREDIENTS: Deionized Water (Aqua),Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice) Gel,Grapefruit (Citrus Grandis Fruit) Extract, Glycolic Acid

I tend to get clogged pores around my nose and chin and I really feel that this toner has helped significantly.

How I use it:

AM: When I wake up in the morning, I use the toner in place of washing my face. I swipe my cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin with a toner-soaked cotton pad; I feel it gets rid of any oiliness and dirt nicely. Although its meant for sensitive skin, I *do* notice a bit of stingy-tingliness but it goes away after about a minute or so. After this I apply my moisturizer plus sunscreen.

PM: After washing my face in the shower, I apply it the same way before my nightly moisturizer.

I haven’t seen any results on my acne scars honestly, both old and new. I don’t feel like the glycolic acid is strong enough to make that kind of change. The amount of redness in my skin has not changed either.

But  for oil control, reducing dry flakes, and reducing the frequency of my breakouts, I think it works wonderfully!

Where to buy it: Mario Badescu, Nordstrom, CVS Beauty 360

Price:  $18 for 8 oz

Pros:

  • Not alcohol based, therefore not drying
  • Only 4 ingredients
  • Helps keep my skin clear
  • Skin texture feels smooth and keeps flakies at bay
  • Good at removing oil and dirt

Cons:

  • A bit pricey for toner
  • A tiny bit sticky due to the aloe ingredient, but I don’t mind it
  • Packaging is simple and not pretty
  • A little bit of stinging after applying
  • Probably won’t lighten older acne scars

Rating: 5 stars

Since my breakouts have been less frequent, I have to say that this is my HG toner.  Clear skin is priceless!
