I haven’t made an official post about this… but Justin and I are moving in together! He has until the end of February to move everything and starting March, we’ll be sharing the mortgage payments.
YAY!
This is a big step. My 876 square feet is feeling a lot squishier than before. Once my parents and friends found out, I got more than a few “how are you two going to fit?” questions. The bedroom, garage, and living room look like a hot mess. The kitchen and office, however, are nice and neat after some intense organization! We’re getting there…slowly but surely.
Now that we have to merge belongings, we have a lot of doubled items. I’m going through every inch of space (and not to mention, junk drawer) to see what I can sell/donate/throw away.
And it’s painful. I know it’ll be worth it in the end… I know that things have to get messy before it gets better. But the process of moving in/out really puts things into perspective. HOW in the world did I amass such a HUGE pile of STUFF?! I don’t want to think about how much money I spent and ultimately wasted. Most of the time I feel like I’m a pretty good shopper. I’m not a hoarder. But the giant pile of trashbags stuffed in my car’s trunk tells me otherwise. Sigh.
It’s so SOBERING. No shopping for me for a while. I’m so happy that we’re making such big changes in our lives…. but OMG. I’m stressed out about the amount of stuff to go through!!

o my! i feel your pain! moving absolutely sucks! but like you said, it’ll be so worth it in the end once all of your items are neatly organized and you toss things you don’t need anymore.
I feel your pain! I am in the process of moving in with my boyfriend…. resulting in a lot of purging & swearing off shopping for a very long time
Would love to hear of any clever ways you figured out for storage; tips/tricks for packing/ moving/ consolidating belongings; a house tour showing how you were able to combine both of your things into the space
Good luck! It’ll be worth it in the end!
I too have so much extra stuff tucked away that never gets used! Since I already live with my boyfriend, I have no motivation to look through it all! I think I need to give myself a solid day and just go through ever drawer and every box, even those on the high up shelves in the closet… ugh. The most difficult part is getting my boyfriend to purge *his* junk. He doesn’t want to throw anything away, so if I make him take it out of our apartment, he will put it in his storage unit. This doesn’t solve anything. Donating is admirable, so even though you felt you wasted money, someone will put your items to good use so you can feel good about helping out others in need
This is so exciting, so congratulations !!

this post couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. starting in March, I will be doing a major overhaul of cleaning and discarding over ten years worth of accumulated crap in anticipation of my FH moving in in September. I hope you’ll share your journey along the way as a guide and inspiration for others in your (and my) position.
Good Luck! throwing stuff away is so hard but sometimes you need a major reason to get it done and moving in with someone you love is probably one of the better reasons (better than having to move to a smaller apartment, for example).
Congrats on this big step!
I found that ruthlessly prepurging for a few weeks before moving in with PiC really helped cut down the pain (and potential fighting! heh) of squishing two people into the same storage and living spaces.
Maybe you can have a blog sale too?
Hey Congrats Elle!! So happy for you guys. Huge step but a great one too
