This isn’t an original tutorial by any means, but I’ve been so inspired by warmer weather and the neon trend that I wanted to try this out for myself!
This is wholly inspired by Tom Binns. They have amazing neon jewelry collection but I just don’t have the cash to shell out for a piece!
I first scoured Ebay for the cheapest rhinestone necklace that I could find, and I ended up purchasing this one for $4.11. It also came with bonus earrings! I’ll have to paint them at a later date.

I know a lot of people use neon nail polish for this type of DIY project, but I didn’t have any polishes on hand. I figured acrylic paints were cheaper than buying a new polish, plus a nail polish brush is a little too big for detailed work.
And why use white? I was afraid that the neon paint on its own would be too sheer, so white underneath would help bring the color out.
I went to Michaels and purchased a neon acrylic paint for $1.29 with a 40% off coupon. (I already had some brushes and some white acrylic paint on hand.) Since acrylic paints are water based, I also used a clear nail polish to seal the paint.
If it doesn’t last… well hey. I spent only $5.40 for this project! And it took only a couple hours to do. Cheap, fun and easy!
What you’ll need:
- rhinestone necklace
- white acrylic paint
- neon acrylic paint
- small brushes
- clear nail polish

I wanted the design to be symmetrical and highlight the angles and scalloped details of this necklace.

Finished!

what an ingenious idea !!!! it turned out soooo nice
you should buy a few of them.. paint them and then sell them again lol – great DIY!
Mad love honey!
I LOOOOOOOOVE THIS!!! I wanna try it
I literally just did this yesterday! I used neon pink nail polish on some rhinestones just because I had it, and I used neon yellow and white acrylic paint on others. I think the acrylic actually looks better than the nail polish so far, but I haven’t done a 2nd coat yet!
And thanks for your comment on my blog – glad you were able to find my Gap review helpful. I’m now following you on Bloglovin!
